a superbowl commercial almost made me cry

i've always been made fun of for my inability to cry--my lack of visible emotional displays.

well, i am proud to say my heart of stone is no longer! and it was a superbowl commercial, nonetheless. this helpless, unemployed little robot tugged my heart like no other commercial has ever done. and i must say, props to GM for their innovative marketing strategy! they captured america. so turn up the sound, grab some kleenex and check it out:

ok, yeah, that commercial totally had me, especially when i realized our robotic friend was going to commit SUICIDE because he had dropped a measely little bolt, which was so very sad but on the other hand, pathetic, but then i realized that the ONLY THING that robot knew was his place inside the plant! so of COURSE he would be suicidal about dropping a bolt! almost like in shawshank redemption when brooks finally got out of jail after 50 years, but was "institutionalized" as morgan freeman said because all he knew was the inside of a jail cell, which led him to commit suicide because he didn't even know how make it in the real world outisde of jail. and so i felt really badly for our robotic friend, the institutionalized brooks jr., and was so very scared for him, especially when his metalic body was sinking so very quickly to the bottom of the whatever-body-of-water and i was on the edge of my seat wondering who was going to save his soul (of course i truly believed he HAD a soul by this point)...but then it was a dream. and i was shocked. and then after the commercial was over i was completely pissed that the stupid GM people had successfully conned me into comparing a pathetic-excuse-of-a-fake-robot to poor ole' brooks from the best movie of all time. crap. i'm such a sucker.

ah, brooke. indeed we are ALL suckers. it doesn't take much to capture our sympathy. while the commercial is darkly humorous, like you said, it's satirical honesty scares me. i wonder if anyone watched that commercial who was recently laid off, or had recently been alienated by friends/family because of a mistake he had made? he probably found himself relating to the pathetic, jobless robot--but i hope he made it to the end of the commercial before deciding to follow the robot's path.

man. people get angry about violent video games. talk about influence. . .
